Kańczuga is a town in southeastern Poland, situated in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in Galicia. The first recorded Jewish presence in the town dates back to 1638, with the total Jewish population numbering 967 in 1921. The Jewish local cemetery was likely established in the late 18th or early 19th century, as a synagogue was already present by the mid-18th century. The 2.2 acre cemetery served not only Kańczuga's Jewish community but also those from neighboring towns such as Białoboki, Markowa, Manasterz, Zagórz, and Chmielnik.
At the beginning of the occupation in 1939, the Germans prohibited placing matzevot to identify who was buried there. In the following years, the cemetery was devastated and the Germans carried out executions on its grounds. There have been two fundraising events since the early 2000s. The funds raised were to maintain the brick fence and gate and cut back vegetation.
We seek donations to clean and protect this currently overgrown Jewish cemetery.
