You might know the town as Ciechanów in Polish or טשעכאנאוו in Yiddish. Before WWII, it was home to a large Jewish community, but during the war most were murdered. One cemetery survives: at Sienkiewicza street, established in the 19th century with the last known burial in 1918. The weed-covered cemetery is about 5 acres in size, with no gravestones remaining on site. The cemetery contains a 1961 monument to Shoah victims placed by members of the former Jewish community as well as unmarked mass graves. Additional information about the cemetery (from which this paragraph was adapted) can be found here.

Additonal information about the town and Jewish community of Ciechanów are also available at this JRI-Poland cadastral map and this German-made 1940 video.

Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland is raising money under the leadership of descendant Albee Kava to restore the monument in the cemetery. That the monument remains there to this day is a testament to the respect for it by the local community. We work to support yhe work of FODŻ (the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland) in carrying out this restoration and protecting this site. Please click on either "Donate" button on this page to make your donation by credit card or Pay Pal.
